What to Expect from Surgery

We always keep you up to date on why we recommend a surgical procedure and any post-operative care your pet may require at home. At our clinic, we follow very strict surgical procedures.

Veterinary Surgical Procedures

We perform medical and emergency surgeries at Western Veterinary Hospital to help treat disease and conditions in pets, as well as to repair injuries caused by trauma.

Elective and non-elective surgeries are routinely performed by our San Angelo veterinarians:

• Soft Tissue Surgery

  Soft tissue surgical procedures are available for pets with ear, nose, and throat problems.

  Hepatic, urogenital, oncological, cardiothoracic, gastrointestinal, and skin disorders can all be treated with these procedures.

• Spaying & Neutering

  We surgically sterilize a cat or dog when we spay or neuter them to prevent disease and give them a longer life expectancy.

• C-Sections

  We surgically remove puppies or kittens from their mother's uterus during Cesarean sections.

  C-sections are typically performed when the mother is unable to give birth naturally. 

• Ocular

  Your pet may require ocular surgery if they are experiencing pain, redness, or other symptoms in or around their eyes.

  Eyelid tumor removal, cataract surgery, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, exenteration of the orbit, and cherry eye surgery are all common ocular procedures for cats and dogs.

  If your cat or dog requires surgery, our veterinarians will refer you to a pet surgeon in the San Angelo area and will work closely with your animal surgeon to ensure that your pet receives the best possible care.

• Mass Removal

  Masses associated with the skin can develop in cats and dogs. Masses can also form inside the body cavity, posing a serious or even life-threatening threat.

  Mass removal surgery is a fairly common procedure for both cats and dogs.

• Foreign Body

  Sometimes, foreign objects are ingested or can get stuck inside a cat's or dog's body.

  We can perform foreign body surgery on your pet if they have eaten something they shouldn't have or if they have been injured in an accident.

  Pet surgery may require specialized skills or equipment in some cases. If this is the case with your pet, your veterinarian will refer you to a cat or dog surgeon in the San Angelo area who will work closely with you to ensure that your pet receives the best possible care.

• Wounds

  Living tissue is cut, broken, burned, torn, or otherwise damaged, resulting in wounds.

  It's critical that these wounds are cleaned, disinfected, and treated as soon as possible by a qualified veterinarian.

• Orthopedic Surgery

  Orthopedic surgeries help your pet's bones, ligaments, joints, tendons, and other skeletal structures heal from injuries and diseases. If your dog or cat has a condition or injury that necessitates advanced specialized care, your veterinarian will refer your pet to a veterinarian in the San Angelo area.

• Dental Surgery

  Our veterinarians provide dental surgeries for dogs and cats. These surgeries can range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.

The Surgery Process

We understand that bringing your pet in for surgery can be a scary prospect. Please rest assured that we only recommend surgery when it is in your pet's best interests.

We will make certain that you understand why surgery is recommended and that you are confident in making the decision to proceed.

Our veterinarians will refer you to a veterinary surgeon in the San Angelo area if your pet requires advanced care, and will work closely with your vet surgeon to ensure that your pet receives the best possible care.

Surgical protocols at our clinic include:

Pre-surgical assessments. To determine if your pet is at risk of anesthesia-related complications, we will confirm the procedure's details, conduct a physical examination of the patient, and ensure that blood tests have been completed and reviewed by the veterinarian.

Dedicated surgical suites. Surgical procedures are carried out in a dedicated surgical suite. To avoid infection and cross-contamination, this room is kept completely sterile.

Surgical attire. When in the surgical suite, our staff wears disposable caps and masks at all times. Sterile gowns and single-use gloves will be worn by those involved in the procedure.

Sterile packs and equipment. Prior to each surgery, we thoroughly clean, sterilize, and wrap our surgical instruments and equipment.
